0페이지는 존재하지 않는 장소다. 숫자 0일 수도, 글자와 글자 사이의 구멍일 수도, 페이지와 페이지 사이의 빈 여백일 수도 있다. 작가에게는 첫 페이지를 쓰기 전의 마음가짐이며, 독자에게는 첫 장을 읽기 시작하기 전에 받는 책 전체에 대한 느낌이다. 또 책의 마지막 페이지를 다 읽고 난 후의 감상 덩어리이다. 책이 가지고 있는 에너지 덩어리이다. 같은 책을 두 번, 세 번 읽는 반복의 형상이다. 같은 문장을 계속 읽었을 때 사라지는 서사 뒤에 비춰지는 어떤 이미지 덩어리다. 내 현실과 심정이 책에 새겨지는 이미지 덩어리이기도 하다. -<0페이지 책> 프롤로그 중
어렸을 때 읽었던 《어린 왕자》를 비롯해 《나의 라임 오렌지나무》, 《상실의 시대》 등 총 15권의 책을 선별한 것도 처음부터 작정한 것은 아니었다. 그동안 읽어온 수많은 책 중에서 기억에 남아 다시 읽고, 그 의미가 새롭게 다가온 것들만 고른 것이다. 책을 읽고 가슴에 남는 문구들이 있는 책장을 뜯어 과감히 문구를 제외한 텍스트는 드로잉으로 지웠다. 책 속 주인공에 이입된 내가 표지에 등장한다. 이러한 리메이킹(re-making) 작업은 결국 책을 읽는 방법을 제시한다기보다는, 책의 구조 자체를 탐색하며 나를 반추하는 과정이다.
Page 0 does not exist. It can be the number zero, a hole between a word and a word, or empty space between a page and a page. To an artist, it can be an attitude when s/he writes the first page. To a reader, a feeling about the entire book before reading it. It is a mass of energy contained in the book. It is a shape of reading one book over and over again. It is a mass of images behind the vanishing narrative when reading one sentence repeatedly. It is also a mass of images on which my reality and thoughts are inscribed. -'0 page book' prologue
It was not intentional that I selected 15 books, including The Little Prince, My Sweet Orange Tree, and Norwegian Wood. Among the books I have read so far, I chose those that have remained in my memory and whose meaning became renewed. I boldly tore up pages containing memorable phrases and erased text beside the phrases with drawings. I also drew on book covers myself as if figures in books. Such re-making work is a process of exploring structure of the books and reflecting myself, rather than proposing how to read books.
